HOLD THE LINE (Shirk) Come alive! And on an Autumn night you were In my eyes All the best and all the worst In my eyes You know that I I am real and I am cursed to Hold the line And put everybody first And hold the line And you.... There’s always something more I could do
2.
LONESOME DISTANT SIRENS (Shirk) I might be so wrong But I think we’re alright Palm trees fall down and Lean into power lines With the porch light on Lip is bleeding, cold hands are at my side Who will answer those Distant, sad, and lonesome sirens? The fall is over This town fell down in One evening, 1955 I know I know that sound Though I was not here or alive Yeah, I might be wrong I’ve had this feeling, I’ve had it many times And I remember you I know your name do you Remember mine? The fall is over It was you who Split my lip open palmed It will come back to you Piece by piece or all at once With the porch light on I have been waiting here all this time And I will prove you wrong Hands in pocket I will wait outside The fall is over
3.
AT MAGIC HOUR CATHEDRAL (Shirk) Goodnight midnight! I’m walking towards the Twilight Hall And as I pass by I see the things I’ve seen before At Magic Hour Cathedral Dressed in purple Then I slept for four years And awoke on the velvet moors And in the psychic frontier The apparition said “Follow me home” To Magic Hour Cathedral Dressed in purple And the hills are singing
4.
BLOOD ORANGES (Shirk) Blood Oranges I’ve seen it in my mind Blood Oranges I’ve seen them in my mind
5.
Mary-Anne 04:33
MARY-ANNE (Shirk) I fell asleep out on the back porch As the town was turning out the lights With a shotgun across my lap It made me feel like I was alive I had a dream that we were waiting For the bombs to fall from the sky You wore a summer dress with no shoes I wore my very best suit and tie I don’t know where I am Or where we’re off to Or what you see when you turn out the lights I don’t know where I am Or where we’re off to There’s something out in the darkness Tonight I woke up out on the front porch And watched the stars all fall from the sky And the darkness became more daunting With the elm trees creaking in the night Do you ever feel like we’re waiting For something that never arrives? And the dreams that we were dreaming Are just as real when we open our eyes?
6.
ANIMALS THAT SING (Shirk) I am only one Of the animals that sing
7.
TRUE BELIEVERS (Shirk) True believers While you wait For somebody to call We are leaving on the next train What will you say when you’re wrong?
8.
MY PARACHUTE IS BLACK (Shirk) I, I have an announcement I can’t take it back With my eyes, I am a vampire You better watch your back And all this time I am watching you You, you are forgiven For everything you lack Oh and I, I am a nightmare My parachute is black And all this time I am watching you
9.
YOU’LL NEVER FIND ME (Shirk) You’ll never find me You’ll never take me alive Not in a hundred (thousand) years No matter how hard you try You (I) haven’t heard a word that I’ve (you’ve) said Now I’ll (you) walk away and sigh Cross my (your) arms and roll my (your) eyes You’ll never take me alive You’ll never take me alive
10.
MIDNIGHT MOVIES (Shirk) Midnight movies are coming on Same ones you saw when you were young Up all night and all alone Midnight movies are coming on

about

‘Midnight Movies’ is the first album that Richard Shirk put his name to and is a genuinely weird outing. Beatnik indie singles (‘Lonesome Distant Sirens,’ ‘My Parachute is Black’), psych-folk (‘At Magic Hour Cathedral’), and brief Guided by Voices like transmissions (‘Blood Oranges,’ ‘Midnight Movies’) make for a haunting, Halloween panorama of an album. Shirk played all the instruments except for when his pals and/or his cat helped out and recorded ‘Midnight Movies’ in a strange nook in his small apartment.

about

Richard Shirk Oakland, California

Before you agree that streaming music killed the cult band, consider the strange tales told by Oakland musician Richard Shirk. Sounding like college radio at one a.m. circa 1982, Shirk’s concise, and vivid songs have one foot firmly planted in the realm of the 3 minute (or less) indie single and the other in a used bookshop somewhere in the Midwest browsing through vintage Bradbury paperbacks. ... more
